The U15 football team of O'Connell Secondary School were crowned Shield champions following a hard-fought and memorable final against St Kevin's on 12 May 2026.
From the opening whistle, it was clear that this would be a fiercely contested encounter. O’Connell’s suffered an early setback when St Kevin’s took the lead with a well-placed strike that our goalkeeper managed to get a hand to, but unfortunately could not keep out.
In keeping with the spirit and resilience the U15 side has shown throughout the season, the players responded brilliantly and refused to let their heads drop. O’Connell’s gradually took control of the game and deservedly equalised through a superb header from Sean Flynn-Hart.
O’Connell’s continued to dominate large periods of the first half, creating several excellent chances to go ahead. Nelvin and Abdi both came close, but were unlucky not to find the target.
The second half was evenly balanced and highly competitive, with both teams battling hard in every area of the pitch. However, with just seven minutes remaining, captain Karson Butler produced the breakthrough moment. His powerful effort proved too difficult for the goalkeeper to hold, sparking huge celebrations among the players and management team.
Karson then sealed the victory two minutes from time with a perfectly placed shot into the corner of the net, capping off a tremendous performance and ensuring O’Connell’s would lift the Shield.
It was a fantastic achievement for the entire squad, with every player contributing superbly throughout the campaign and in the final itself. The teamwork, determination, and character shown by the U15 team were a credit to the school, and it was wonderful to see them rewarded with silverware.
